A double miracle
Naw Lay Lay Poe, one of the PA program graduates and now a full-time PA at RTC, just successfully delivered twins in an incredibly complex pregnancy.
Dr. Thiri, the former OB doctor, helped train Naw Lay Lay Poe, who's the lead PA now on all PA-team lower segment Cesarean sections (LSCSs). So when a woman heavily pregnant with twins arrived to RTC asking for an LSCS, she was sent straight to Naw Lay Lay Poe.
An ultrasound revealed that the twins shared an amniotic sac — this situation accounts for only 0.003% of twin pregnancies and is very risky for both babies, who can become entangled and cut off each others' blood supply. In this situation, twins are usually delivered between 32 and 34 weeks. This mother was believed to be more than 37 weeks pregnant.
Naw Lay Lay Poe had a difficult decision to make. Because RTC doesn't have a NICU, we try to avoid delivering babies before 39 weeks, to reduce respiratory complications. But waiting meant greater and greater risk of the babies becoming entangled.
Consulting remotely with Dr. Thiri and our Australian midwife, Mon Parker, Naw Lay Lay Poe chose to wait. At 38 weeks and 5 days, the mother had grown incredibly uncomfortable and was feeling less fetal movement. Naw Lay Lay Poe decided it was go time.
She safely delivered both twins by C-section, with no nurses or surgeons in attendance; the rest of her team was made up of the incredible PA students. Mother and babies are all healthy, and we couldn't be more proud of Naw Lay Lay Poe and her team.
